Hungry joints
Pevsner’s Architectural Glossary (second edition) was published in 2018 by Yale University Press and updated with a forward by Simon Bradley.
It defines hungry joints as: ‘Brick or stone joints without pointing (exposed mortar), or deeply recessed to show the outline of each stone’.
When used intentionally, this technique allows every brick or stone to be emphasised. However, it is not recommended, since hungry joints are not suitable for most weather conditions.
